Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means writing and structuring your pages so search engines and AI assistants can lift a short, accurate answer from them. For an online shop, the quickest wins are the questions customers ask before they buy: how much is delivery, how fast is it, can I return it, and is checkout safe? Answer those clearly, near the top of the page, and you give Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Copilot something they can quote.
AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. The basics still matter: a fast, secure site, pages search engines can crawl, and content that genuinely helps. What changes is the way you write, putting the answer first and the explanation after.
The short version
- Put a direct answer in the first sentence or two of every key page, then add detail.
- Use headings that match the questions customers ask, in their words.
- Give specific facts: prices, timescales, cut-off times, conditions.
- Keep your product data, Merchant Center feed and policies consistent everywhere, because AI tools cross-check them.
- Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, but clear questions and answers on the page still help people and AI tools alike.

What changed, and why shops should care
Shoppers increasingly ask questions in AI Mode, ChatGPT or Copilot instead of clicking through results. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can run several related searches at once, a process it calls query fan-out, then build one answer with links to the sources it used.
For a shop, that means a customer might learn your delivery charge, your returns window and whether you have something in stock without visiting your website. If your answers are buried or vague, the AI will use someone else’s.
Google’s own guidance is reassuring: there’s no special AI markup or file you need. Pages have to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, and the usual good practice applies. Our complete guide to AEO covers the principles. This article shows how to put them into practice on a shop.
The answer-first rewrite
Here’s the difference in practice, using the question “What is answer engine optimisation?”
Before: “AEO is an emerging practice focused on making content more accessible to AI systems. With the growth of conversational AI, marketers must consider…” The definition is buried and nothing is clear until the third sentence.
After: “Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is structuring and writing content so search engines and AI assistants can pull out a short, accurate answer to a question. It builds on SEO, with more focus on direct answers, clear structure and up-to-date facts.”
The second version can be quoted on its own. That’s the test for every key paragraph: would it still make sense if someone copied it out of the page?
Worked example: a question-and-answer set for a WooCommerce shop
Below is an example set of customer questions for a fictional UK homeware shop. The policies are illustrations only, so swap in your own.
What delivery options do you offer, and how long do they take?
Standard delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Express delivery arrives the next working day if you order before 2pm, Monday to Friday. Saturday delivery is available to most UK postcodes. Every order comes with tracking by email and text.
How much does delivery cost?
Standard delivery is £3.95, or free on orders over £50. Express is £6.95 and Saturday delivery is £9.95. International delivery is calculated at checkout, and any duties and taxes are shown before you pay.
What is your returns policy?
You can return unused items in their original packaging within 30 days. Start a return from our returns page, print the label and drop the parcel off. We refund you within 3 to 5 working days of receiving it. Personalised and perishable items can’t be returned unless they’re faulty.
Which payment methods do you accept, and is checkout secure?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payments use 3D Secure and are handled by a PCI DSS compliant payment provider, over an encrypted connection.
When will an out-of-stock item be back?
Most items are restocked within 1 to 3 weeks. Click “Email me when back in stock” on the product page and we’ll let you know. If you need something urgently, contact us and we’ll check lead times or suggest an alternative.
Notice the pattern: the answer comes first, the numbers are specific, and each answer stands on its own.
Where to put these answers
- On the pages themselves. Put the delivery answer at the top of your delivery page, and a short version on product pages near the “Add to basket” button.
- In a help or FAQ page that brings the common questions together, with links to the full policies.
- In your product descriptions, answering the questions people ask about that product: sizes, materials, care, compatibility.
Structured data for shops in 2026
Structured data won’t get you into AI answers on its own. Google says there’s no special schema you need for its generative AI features. But it does help search engines read your product information accurately, and it can make you eligible for richer results.
- Product and Offer markup on every product page, with price, currency, availability, shipping details and returns policy. Most WooCommerce set-ups add the basics automatically, so check yours includes shipping and returns.
- Organization markup on your home page, with your name, logo, contact details and links to your official profiles.
- A Google Merchant Center feed. Google says Merchant Center feeds help products appear in AI responses as well as in ordinary search results.
- FAQ markup is now optional. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026. You don’t have to remove existing markup, and other search engines may still use it, but don’t expect it to change how you appear in Google.
WordPress and WooCommerce quick wins
- Add a 40 to 60 word answer to the top of your delivery, returns and key category pages.
- Rewrite headings as the questions customers actually ask.
- Make sure prices, delivery charges and policies match on every page, in your feed and on marketplaces.
- Check that product pages load quickly on a phone, and switch off apps and plugins you don’t use.
- Add the date you last updated each policy page.
- Link from product pages to the relevant policies, and from policies back to popular categories.
- Keep your Google Business Profile up to date if you also have a shop or showroom.
How to tell if it’s working
- Look at the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console, if Google has made it available for your site, to see how often your pages are shown as sources in AI answers.
- Check AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools, which shows how often Copilot cites your pages.
- Track visits from AI assistants in Google Analytics 4. Our guide to tracking AI search traffic shows you how to set it up.
- Watch for fewer “where’s my order?” and returns emails. Clear answers help customers before they ever reach your inbox.
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO is part of SEO, with a sharper focus on direct answers. The foundations are the same: crawlable pages, helpful content and a fast site. AEO adds answer-first writing and clear, consistent facts.
Do I need a special plugin for AEO in WooCommerce?
No. Clear writing does most of the work. A good SEO plugin or theme handles product and organisation structured data, and Google says there’s no special AI markup you need to add.
Should I remove FAQ schema now that Google has dropped FAQ rich results?
You don’t need to. Google says leaving it in place causes no errors, and other search engines may still use it. Just don’t add it expecting a special listing in Google.
How long should an answer be?
Long enough to be complete, and no longer. For most shop questions, 40 to 60 words covers it, with a link to the full policy for anyone who wants detail.
