  • Otters are excellent swimmers, but believe it or not, cannot hold their breath for long periods of time underwater. They typically dive for no more than 30 seconds at a time.
  • The typical otter territory is approximately 12 to 18 miles of riverbank.
  • An otter’s home is called a Holt. They will have many of these within their territory. These are typically used for shelter and protection from prey. Besides the homes of Holts or Otters, they also have resting sites, called dens, which are often located in dense vegetation by the side of water.
